The Dorothy Dozier Helping Hands Award Goes to... Dr. Mary Sosa!
The 2020 Dorothy Dozier Helping Hands Awardee is Dr. Mary Sterner-Sosa. Mary completed her undergraduate degree in Environmental Toxicology at UC Davis, subsequently obtaining her medical degree from UC, San Diego in 1988. Mary is a member of the American College of OB/GYN. During her 22 years of practice in the Sacramento area, Mary served as chief of OB/GYN for Mercy General Hospital. She served on their Medical Executive Committee. She is married to Gustavo Sosa, MD. They have 3 children.
Mary’s long history of community service began in high school as a teen leader for the Catholic Youth Organization. In college, she was a member and a lector for the Neuman Center, and taught catechism to pre-school children. Mary also volunteered at the UC Davis Women’s Health Clinic. While in medical school, under the supervision of Dr. Doris Howell, a pioneer in medicine and pediatric hematology/oncology, Mary developed a curriculum for a medical student course on death and dying. Mary has been involved with the Sacramento Life Center for 20 years, volunteering in their clinics performing OB ultrasounds and developing clinic protocols. Mary served on the board of the Life Center for more than 15 years.
Mary joined the Alliance in 2014. She immediately became an active member serving as legislative representative, chair of programs, recording secretary, president (for 3 consecutive years), and for the past 20 months as co-chair of the Art of Medicine 2020. Her co-chair, Linda Meyers says, “To work alongside Mary is to always have the benefit of a fresh, thoughtful perspective, and a calm approach to challenges and problem solving. She is, to put it simply, a pleasure to work with. The icing on the cake is that we have also become great friends.”
While community service is her passion, her family is her love. Mary is most proud of her son, Gustavo, and daughters, Adrianna and Marcela. Says her husband, Dr. Gustavo Sosa, “I am so fortunate to have met her, and more so that she agreed to marry me…..Mary enjoys family life and cherishes every moment our kids are visiting……they really take after her and that is a very good thing.” Her daughter, Marcela, notes that, “…it is simply within my mother to be there for people. To lead, to comfort, to lean on, to laugh with.” Mary’s daughter, Adrianna states, “When I am complemented on my own bedside manner, I attribute everything to observing my mother and her practice…..she is the most incredible mother a person could ask for, and my siblings and I consider ourselves very blessed.” To Mary’s delight, Dr. Sosa, Marcela, Gustavo, and Adrianna were surprise guests at the ceremony.
The Sierra Sacramento Valley Medical Society Alliance is pleased to present the 2020 Dorothy Dozier Helping Hands Award to Mary Sterner-Sosa, M. D. In keeping with the legacy of Dorothy Dozier, Mary never declines an opportunity to lend a helping hand. Congratulations, Mary!

SSVMSA Members New & Old Join Us!
Everyone asks, why should I volunteer to be on the Board of Directors for SSVMSA? Just a few reasons include to develop and deepen friendships with other members, to finding purpose during what has become a long and difficult time, to provide meaningful help to the community in which you live during a stressful and challenging time, to develop new skills and learn new things. And this is just to name a few! Board positions are varied and encompass a wide range skills and time commitments. Is technology your gift? Organizing social functions? Fundraising? Teaching? Project based involvement? Would you like to invest a few hours a week or a few minutes? Whatever it is, there is a place for you and we would welcome your interest, innovation, and talent.
Nominations for positions on the SSVMSA Board are now open for the coming year. To explore the possibilities or to nominate yourself or a friend, please contact anyone on the nominating committee:
